Description

IC1396 is one of the largest emission nebulae in the northern sky (angular size 3°). It is illuminated by the massive star HD206267 (SAO33626), located in the center. It is a triple star system of magnitude 5.7, whose stellar wind is extremely fast, ionizing and compressing the surrounding gas. All three components are massive stars, and the intense ultraviolet radiation they emit, ionizes IC 1396's gas and causes the compression of the nebula's denser globules, leading to star formation. IC1396 contains:
- The H2 region (emission nebula).
- The central open star cluster (Cr 439).
- The formation known as “Elephant Trunk” (IC1396A). It is a cold molecular cloud, a column of non-ionized gas. At 8:30 in the photo.
- Inside the Elephant Trunk there is a small reflection nebula (barely noticeable in the image), cataloged as vdB 142, which is illuminated by the star HD 239710, a blue star of spectral type B and apparent magnitude 9.4 . It is at the end of the "trunk".ube.
- The dark nebula Barnard 161 (B161). In the photograph, it is located at 5:30 h.
